Bentleigh put in a team effort to dismantle Brighton Union!


Bentleigh Uniting 1 celebrate monumental victory in a home-ground, first-innings win against Brighton Union 1 in Round 1 of Longmuir Shield finals. Bentleigh’s Callum Cathcart and Lukas Galanopoulos score impressive fifties, and the bowling mastery of Malin Silva (6 wickets) and Chris Lavery (2 wickets) clinches the game.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon at Centenary Park, the Bentleigh Uniting 1 cricket team hosted Brighton Union 1 in the much-anticipated Round 1 of Longmuir Shield finals. The home team notched a score of 229 in the first innings, setting a difficult target for the visitors from Brighton.

The match opened with Bentleigh Uniting 1 batting. Unfortunately, the first batter, Charlie Davidson, fell prey to an LBW decision against Robert Blair of Brighton. However, momentum gathered as Callum Cathcart, second in line, got his eye in. He scored a solid 74, elegantly spreading his runs across the field. Quickly following suit, Lukas Galanopoulos, in the 4th slot, scored a vital 58 runs, contributing to a robust score board. Equally important were Joshua Bregazzi and Harry Zaia, who added some vital runs in the middle order.

By the time Bentleigh finished their innings, they had posted a formidable score of 229, despite the aggressive bowling by Robert Blair, who claimed six wickets. An excellent display of batting by the home team set an intimidating target for the opponents.

Brighton Union 1 were faced with a daunting task. They began their chase with Phillip-Vincent Falvo, who batted well for his 30. However, wickets began tumbling as the penetrating bowling by Bentleigh made it impossible for Brighton to get into a comfortable play. A standout innings by Syed Asad Ali who scored 57 couldn't save the day for Brighton Union 1. Despite contributions from Darian Kuzma and Antony Persi, their team crashed to 163 all out.

Bentleigh’s bowling department was spearheaded by Malin Silva who was successful in routing Brighton’s batting line-up, claiming six wickets. He was ably supported by Chris Lavery, who secured two wickets to hasten Brighton's downfall. The pair expertly bowled, striking at critical stages of the game and securing Bentleigh’s victory on the very first innings.

In conclusion, the Longmuir Shield Finals Round 1 saw Bentleigh Uniting 1 paint an assertive stroke with their first-innings victory over Brighton Union 1. A blend of strategic batting and aggressive bowling proved to be a winning combination for the home team. Callum Cathcart and Lukas Galanopoulos led the pack with their pivotal half-centuries, making pivotal contributions in setting a challenging total. Equally magically was the bowling duo of Silva and Lavery, whose lethal spells destroyed Brighton's chances of a counter-attack, confirming a significant victory for Bentleigh Uniting 1.
