After 16 years of dedicated service, James Bruce, affectionately known as 'Brucey', is stepping down as the Woolworths Blast Coordinator at Bentleigh Uniting Cricket Club. His tenure has been marked by unwavering commitment to nurturing the club's junior talent and fostering a love for the game among hundreds of young cricketers.
Previously, as a token of appreciation for his contributions, the U14 Highest Grade MVP was named in his honour – a fitting tribute to his legacy.
Brucey's impact extends far beyond the cricket pitch. An avid music fan with eclectic tastes ranging from death metal to folk, he's known for his meticulously organized collection of band t-shirts, alphabetically arranged in his spare room.
Despite his self-deprecating humor about having "too much time on his hands," Brucey's dedication to cricket and his juniors is unparalleled.
Club Secretary Ryan Davidson aptly describes Brucey's influence: "Jimmy has - and will continue to be - cherished by the Bentleigh Uniting Cricket Club. His impact on junior development cannot be understated, as he’s played a massive part in developing 100s kids as cricketers over the years."
Davidson emphasizes Brucey's unwavering commitment to the junior program, noting how he instills passion and dedication in every young player, regardless of skill level.
Former President John Halliday reflects on Brucey's journey from novice cricketer to indispensable club stalwart: "James Bruce ventured down to the club with minimum cricket background and a low skill level but with a ready smile and a willingness to fully commit himself to any task."
Halliday acknowledges two influential recruits during his term: the prominent Champion player and coach Glenn Lalor, credited with leading the club to multiple Premierships and James Bruce, another equally essential but modest member, content to contribute quietly.
Halliday acknowledges Brucey's transformation into a proficient cricketer and team player, highlighting his contributions to both junior development and the overall success of the club.
Halliday further praises Brucey's dedication, stating, "James has been an integral part of Uniting success and will continue to leave a legacy through the numerous juniors who have benefited from his leadership and his enthusiastic attitude to cricket and life. James Bruce is a great Uniting person."
Throughout his tenure, Brucey has embodied the spirit of community and camaraderie that defines the Bentleigh Uniting Cricket Club. Whether coaching junior teams, organizing clinics, or serving on the committee, his infectious enthusiasm for cricket and life has left an indelible mark on everyone he's encountered.
As Brucey bids farewell to his official role, his legacy will endure through the countless juniors who have benefited from his mentorship and guidance. His commitment, passion, and selflessness exemplify the best qualities of cricketing leadership, making him a true legend of the game and an invaluable asset to the Bentleigh Uniting Cricket Club.
