Round Nine Junior Recap

Juniors Wrap Round 9

Round 9

Round 9 sees the end of the home and away season for SECA games and the onset of finals. With twilight being a week ahead of Saturday fixtures – and AGCC running as 1 day fixtures only, this wrap is a bit disjointed as far as dates – but here it is none the less! Congratulations to the junior sides that have made finals this season: U14B – Central & U12Bs – well done kids!

A few thank you’s to start…

To our Junior Committee ... David Cannington, Helen Gleeson, David Swann, Penny Hannan, Mark D’Rozario, David Bregazzi, Marty Daff, Chris Elkins and James Bruce, THANK YOU. Your efforts, passion and commitment to our club and your tireless work toward creating the best possible environment for our juniors is not only appreciated – but crucial to our on field and off field success.

To all our amazing coaches, and team managers for all their efforts across all sides this season. THANK YOU. Without you and your input – our junior program would not be possible.

To all our parents – thank you for your involvement in not only your child’s cricketing future – but in the family we call Bentleigh Uniting CC. We encourage you to be more actively involved in the fabric of our club – whether that be via positions directly relating to your child’s side, via committees, or just by coming to social events – both junior and senior. Our club is made strong by the people within it. We have a long and proud history, and we want to be an important place of belonging for you and your family, now and into the future.

U16s AWAY Vs WPCC Match Abandoned

Unfortunately, this match was abandoned in Wk2 due to rain … WPCC had made 114 being bowled out in the 35th over in Wk1. BUCC batted for 2 overs 0/4. With the game result unable to effect finals – it was a disappointing way to end the season.

However – a lot of positives came from it – one of the biggest being the coaching input and mentorship from Hugo Ferdinand & Paddy Franklin who took on this side for the season. BUCC cannot thank them enough for their efforts and we hope to be able to utilise their talents again in future seasons. With the majority of players in this side still eligible to play U16s next season – our hope is that this year’s development under their tutelage can be the steppingstone for a great 20/21 season. Thanks to all players and parents for their commitment to this side and to Ryan (Davo) Davidson for the U16B wraps he has written through this season. Apologies - no team photo available

U14B North HOME Vs ANA/Moorabbin Match Abandoned

Unfortunately, this match was abandoned in Wk2 due to rain … BUCC had batted week one posting a target that we would have had a real crack at defending of 8/124 against the top undefeated side on our home pitch. Unfortunately – the weather got in the way again – which seems to have been our lot this season – with 4 of the 9 rounds being drawn because of weather – and at least 2 of those were definitely winnable. This side has had a challenging season – with numbers being light on most weeks – it made it very difficult for the boys to get into any rhythm and reliable form across the side.

I would like to thank David Swann & David Bregazzi for taking this side on – especially given the loss last minute of crucial numbers that had such an impact on our planned sides.

As the top age U14 side this season – many boys make the step up to U16s for 20/21. With the club implementing new structures, systems, and resources – we hope future seasons can capitalise on the hard work already done. Apologies - no team photo available

U14B Central AWAY Vs Dingley Match Abandoned

Well – there has to be one winner out of all this bad weather and this side is it! Needing to make 254 for victory this match was abandoned in Wk2 due to rain and the pitch resembling a swimming pool! And…into the finals we go!

A 2 day game (weather permitting) to be held at home at Centenary – Friday 21/2 & 28/2 Vs Cluden.

Put it in your diary – we need a Lion army to support these boys coming up against the 2nd top side

Good luck to Helen, Shorty and the boys!!

U12B HOME Vs

Brighton Union 2

WON 129 Vs 8/128

The U12Bs finished off the regular season with a hard fought 1 run win against Brighton Union to finish 3rd (8 wins, 1 loss) and qualify for finals.

The first week set us up in a favourable position to be 5-86 after 20 overs with Noodles Cannington (21), Monty (30 no) and JR Ramalinga (16) setting us on our way. Unfortunately, we lost 5 wickets leaving us with not much in reserve for our second dig.

Brighton Union we’re tied down with some great fielding and tight bowling from the BUCC boys. At the end of the first week we had them 4-53 with Air Jordan Palermo and Archie Baum (1/5) both taking a wicket and Noodles (2/6) picking up a couple with some wiley seamers. The second week saw the Union coming out with some purpose to post 8-128. The BUCC boys found wickets hard to come by... with JR (1/16) and Air Jordan (2/10) claiming wickets and Disco Hannan bowling his best spell of the season taking 2/8 with some Lyon-esque off spin.

On the chase the boys were more cautious, knowing that if they batted out their overs they should get the runs. JR and Air Jordan got us off to a good start before we lost a few wickets to be 8 down and still needing 20-odd runs. Bring on Disco Hannan (7) and The Twist Sinclair (11) - both who played the innings of their lives under great pressure to drag BUCC over the line for a last breath win!

Next Saturday the U12Bs face off against McKinnon in the semi final. Let’s get the maroon & gold army down to see these boys in action - as this round proved they definitely put on a great show!

(Thanks to Dave Cannington for the U12B wrap)

U12C AWAY Vs WPCC

WON 6-165 Vs 7/81

What a last game for the season!! Talk about save the best for last!!

The first innings was set up by some terrific bowling, showing how far each and everyone of the playing team has improved. Ryan took a couple in a row and nearly collected a hat trick.

The batting was outstanding with great partnership’s and individual milestones giving us the lead into the second session. The second innings sent us out to bat and did the boys bat!!

Hugo and Kiedis started the innings on fire, belting the ball all over the ground!!

It didn’t stop there with the rest of the batting line up belting their highest score of 167!!

Awesome Awesome Awesome bowling and fielding efforts.

We pressured the opposition straight out of the blocks with tight bowling and fantastic fielding, wiping out the opposition by taking down the stumps in the most exciting display of cricket for the season!!

Well done you little super stars!! We are very proud of all of your achievements for the season as each player has excelled!! See you all next season so proud of you all.

Thank you to all of the parents and support staff for all of the assistance for the year!! Appreciate it a lot!!

(Thanks to Brad Wilkinson for the U12C wrap)

U12D3 AWAY Vs Elwood 2

LOST 4/40 Vs 3/112

Last week saw poor conditions but the boys batted really well. Kohen went out early, Will and Charlie put on a good partnership. Then Noah, Charlie and Ryan put on good partnerships. Will, Ryan & Charlie scored double figures and batted really well. We were 1/50 odd after we batted and the match was then abandoned due to rain.

We decided to play a 20/20 on Saturday. We struggled to bowl consistently, but there was one direct hit by Eamon, Archer bowled a ball that got a batsman out hit wicket and Ryan got another wicket that was well caught by Kohen. Robbie & Dean bowled impressive spin without luck. They ended up scoring 3/112. In response 5 boys retired not out. Kohen, Noah, Charlie, Ryan & Eamon. The boys showed a lot of promise in the second half of the year. The concentration was not quite there in the field, but the bowling and batting showed improvement. Kohen, Ryan and Charlie ended the year really strong batting consistently and we should look forward to next year with a lot of promise

(Thanks to Mark D’Rozario for the U12D3 wrap)

U12D4 HOME Vs Carnegie 4

LOST 5/108 Vs 3/123

The boys hosted Carnegie after 3 weeks off due to competition and team byes, and unluckily had to content with wet weather in our first week on Saturday 15/Feb. Luke was captaining, won the toss and sent the opposition in trying to take advantage of the ordinary conditions. Fraser bowled a terrific length, Raf as usual managed to get a breakthrough, while Jack and Lincoln looked dangerous. 3/50 from Carnegie was about par, but we too struggled in the conditions ending the first week at 4/51. Fraser continued his fine post Christmas form as did Xavier before both losing their wickets to some straight bowling.

In week 2 we were greeted with lovely sunshine and the boys batted with great skill and discipline. The innings was built around Christian (13 no), Luke (11 no), Archie (10 no) and Mitch (7 no) to set a competitive total of 4/108, only losing 1 wicket for the day which highlighted some great technical batting. In the field the boys struggled to find their radar and Carnegie quickly took advantage. We didn't take a wicket, letting some chances slip and went down by 15 runs which was a shame. It was one of our poorer efforts with the ball, with a lack of continuity of matches and training recently showing out. We finished the season 3 wins, 3 losses and a draw, in a competition that was very even. I can honestly say every boy improved, and they way we combined, especially when building an innings was excellent. Look forward to seeing how they go with more work in the nets and match experience as this bunch really love the game which is a great thing to see and be a part of.

Rookies HOME Vs Kingston Heath

Week 1 - 15/2/20

WON 4/109 Vs 9/64

Wet conditions didn't stop the rookies from playing well against Kingston Heath.

Bowling first they restricted their batters with tight bowling and brilliant fielding which led to 9 wickets. Leo Stafford continued his good form with the ball taking 3/4 and Ben Dessent 2/5. A nice catch by Antonio Tartaro and a run out by Lucas Ramalinga were also highlights from a team of future stars.

All our boys contributed with the bat with Mitchell Dessent top scoring with 13 and Jack Cannington next best with 8. The boys valued their wicket only losing 4 wickets for the innings.

Week 2 - 22/2/20

WON 5/148 Vs 9/72

Bowling first the rookies got off to a flyer taking early wickets. Leo Stafford 2-7, Mitchell Dessent 3/8 and Ben Dessent 3/9 ripped through Kingston Heaths batters.

The boys batting was excellent scoring 86 runs off the bat with Ethan Palermo top scoring with 26, Archie Flegeltaub 17, Leo Stafford 16 and Mitchell Dessent 15 runs. With no finals in the rookies this was the last game of the season and a great way for these lion cubs to finish the season. 12 wins from 15 games is a great effort by these young stars of the club.

(Thanks to Paul (PD) Dessent for the Rookie wrap)

AGCC 16U Round 11 HOME Vs Emmanuel Sth Oakleigh WON 6/103 VS 7/101 (Sunday 15/2/20)

With dew on the ground and footie training in the background, the business end of the season was upon us and WPBUCC had a must win game against ESOCC. Toss was won, and WPBUCC decided to bat. Daisy and Imogen opened and faced a very tight bowling unit and at the change of ends, WPBUCC had only put on 48 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. It wasn’t until Sophie and Erin came to the crease and combined very well, scoring freely and intelligently, with a combination of 4’s and quick singles, did the scoreboard start to look more respectable. Both players retired and came back in at the end of the innings to finish the game on 21 (caught behind) and 28 no respectively. This pushed WPBUCC final score to 6/103; a very defendable total.

However, after a bright start with the bat, our total looked increasing less safe. It wasn’t until Paige bowled her second over, in the eighth over of the innings, did we stem the runs with two wickets; a clear bowled and a caught and bowled. Paige finished with 2 overs 2/12, but at the 10 over mark, ESOCC were 2/57 and on course to reach our total. This all changed with Sophie (2 overs 2/5), Matilda (2 overs 0/10) and Bree (2 overs 0/5) drying up the runs. The pick of the bowlers was Erin (3 over 3/16) claiming the all-important wicket of the returning opener, caught by Daisy. Daisy was given the responsibility of the last over with ESPCC needing 6 to win. A single of the first ball got the danger player off strike and a very neat over saw WPBUCC finish the game victorious, with slenderest of margins of 2 runs. Well done all and finals hopes is still alive.

Cricket aside, the highlight of the morning was seeing all the girls embrace Amy, at the end of the game, to give her support after she had dislocated her knee during the week – All wish her a speedy recovery.

Round 12 AWAY Vs Cluden

WON 5/112 Vs 6/105 (Sunday 23/2/20)

The picturesque Whyte Street was the venue for our final game of the Home/Away rounds. The ladder was very tight and both teams were wanting win to anchor their finals berths. Toss was won by CCC and they decided to put WPBUCC into bat.

Daisy and Emily opened and with 4 fours off the first over, that decision started to look a little hasty. As it wasn’t until Daisy got bowled on 22 and the score at 37 did CCC have any luck with the ball. The runs slowed from the initial frantic pace until Erin and Willow joined each other each in the middle. Erin continued her rich seam of form finishing her innings on 27 not out and Willow contributed with a double figured score of 10 not out. The final score ended 5-112. Seemed defendable, but on a very tight oval anything was possible.

Fortunately runs were hard to come by with tight bowling and tighter fielding. Once Emily and Matilda were thrown the ball, the runs almost dried up completely; both girls finished their two over spell 0/6 and 0/2 respectively. The highlight of the bowling was Darby’s first wicket with a catch behind the stumps by Emily. Other wickets from Paige and Imogen, couple with a couple of run out brought us to the final over with a slight advantage. Daisy was given the responsibility to bowl and a wicket and run-out diverted any late danger and even 4 byes from the last ball was not enough as CCC finished 6/105. WPBUCC had back to back victories for the first time in the season. The margin of victory this week was comfortable at 7 runs.

Well done all and a justly deserves semi-final date with Kingston Heath (Red) awaits us for next Sunday.

AGCC 13U

Round 13 (12/2/20) AWAY Vs Brighton

LOST 6/91 Vs 3/113

We were disappointed to hear that Jassi was unable to play. Brighton won the toss and elected to bat. The lionesses got off to a great start. Our wicket takers were Clem (1/7), Avani (1/25) and Rachel (1/30). Gloris and Jess were unlucky with some near misses. Rowen also bowled extremely well (0 /7). The girls fielded well, with some great keeping from Anna and Jess, and catches from Avani and Jess. Brighton finished with 3/113.

When it was our turn to bat, Jess was our best, out for 16 (after smashing 3 fours). She was supported by Sasha who retired not out for 9 (1 four), Avani finishing on 6 (1 four). The girls showed better running between the wickets this week. Grace was very unlucky to be bowled out on a non-regulation delivery, however we know she will be back next week.

Round 14 (19/2/20) HOME Vs Le Page

LOST 8/45 Vs 3/94

Last game for the season and all the girls were eager to finish the year with a win. We lost the toss and were sent in to bat. Rowen, Gloris and Avani all batted well at the top of the order, protecting their wickets. However, our runout curse returned this week (with Clem, Rachel and Sasha all heading back to the pavilion early). Following the unlucky dismissal last week, Grace showed great patience, remaining at the crease for the maximum 20 balls. We finished our innings 8/45, with our top scorers Rowen and Avani (both with 6).

Following a sausage sizzle innings break, the rain started to fall. However, our girls fielded on. Jess was on fire, bowling two of the opposition out, finishing with 2 for 9. Jasmine also took a wicket, with the help of Anna behind the stumps. The rain affected ball, made bowling difficult for the girls, but they soldiered on and played the game out. Le Page finishing 3/94. Unfortunately, we didn’t finish with the win, but the girls have enjoyed their cricket this year.

Well done on a great season girls. We look forward to seeing you all at Centenary next summer.
