Round one – week one
Longmuir Shield
After winning the toss, skipper Maxy Howells elected to bat and the inspired decision paid immediate dividends, with young guns Hugo Ferdinand and Paddy Franklin defying the East Sandy attack with an opening stand of 46. The departure of Hugo for 19 saw boom import Craig Short stride to the crease, and he quickly went about showing what a huge addition he will be to the club. The Surrey sensation's score of 29 was largely made up of boundaries, with four 4s and a 6 entertaining his teammates and the uniting faithful. Bryce Jansz was next in, but Janszy's stay didn't last too long after a mix-up with Paddy, and he sadly run out for one. Max, unfortunately, got a beauty on debut and was sent on his way without scoring. Then, it was young talent time, with Josh Bregazzi and Paddy joining forces to terrorise the Zebras's attack in an 88-run partnership. When Paddy finally succumbed for a brilliantly-made 74, it brought in Cal Cathcart, who also got amongst the runs with 29. Josh sent a warning to the rest of the competition with a classy 52, while the coach Jason McNally (17) and rising youngster Liam Manakis (16) also made valuable contributions. In the end, the new-look Longy boys should be very proud of a score of 276 – the biggest total of the round.
Quiney Shield
Sent in by Le Page, the boys were in trouble early, losing Ethan 'Smoothie' Manakis, Mick De Bono and Cambo James before the score had reached 20. Returning from the wilderness, Trent Cody top scored with 30, while Ben Halliday (18) and Paul Dissent (10) were the only other batsman to make double figures in a score of just 72. In reply, the hosts are 8/176, with Dan Ewart the best of the bowlers with 3/23.
Thirds
There was method in captain Dave Bregazzi's madness when he won the toss and elected to bowl on a lightning-fast Princes Park oval. Enter Nick 'Lurch' Halliday, fresh from starring role in St Pauls' premiership success, the big quick - only available for week one – put on an absolute clinic to rip through Le Page and snare an amazing 8/65 from 23-straight overs. While his performance will definitely grace the pages of the Moorabbin Leader this week, let's hope his antics on the footy trip in Bali don't make the papers. Chasing 181, the boys have a bit of work to do at 5/57. The skipper defiant on 30 not out.
Fourths
After sending in Southside East Caulfield, the boys did a good job to restrict the hosts to 8/212 on a fast deck. Vinod Bagi and Utpal Bera were the pick of the bowlers with 2/30 and 3/38 respectively, while youngsters Josh Swann and Rohan Wilson also toiled promisingly.
Fifths
After losing the toss, wise skipper Guy Aloi threw the new pill Ryan Waites and Connor Montgomery, and the exciting senior debutants didn't let him down. While they didn't snare a wicket, they constantly troubled the Clayton District batsman. When stumps were called, the boys had restricted the visitors to just 205, with Simon 'Prof' Lucas the best of the bowlers with 4/56.
