LION PRIDE MAUL MACKIE TO SIT EQUAL TOP OF SECA LADDER
ROUND REPORT
Round 3 - Week 2
Longmuir
Looking for a quick kill against a Mackie side staring down 271 and already a wicket down, the boys were up and about early when Hugo (2/19) claimed two wickets with the score on 36. Some sharp work in the field saw Shorty and the smiling assassin, Malin, combine for a smart run out. Another two wickets quickly followed, with Malin taking a great catch off Dolly and Daniel Ewart getting in on the act with his first pole. Another wicket each to Dolly, Malin and Dan saw the visitors all out for just 120, leaving the boys still sitting pretty on the top of the ladder and eagerly anticipating a showdown with foe-turned-friend-turned-foe Bryce Jansz and his Bentleigh ANA side. With the lower-grade sides having the weekend off, the club is expecting a huge turnout at St George to cheer on the boys and remind Janszy what he's missing out on.
QUINEY
After week one was washed out, Omega won the toss and sent the boys in, with Mick Debono and Paddy Franklin perishing early. Cadell, returning to the crease after several years in the wilderness, proved he hadn't lost any of the prowess that saw him one of the most sought-after players on the Melbourne club scene with a sparkling 40 (6 fours and 1 six). His running between the wickets could do with some work, though. Andrew Clarkson, inspired by 'the Duke of Malvernn', did some damage of his own with 28. PD was PD, with his quickfire 25 a routine captain's knock from the great man. The tail failed to wag, so 149 was what the bowlers had to defend. And it didn't prove to be enough, with hosts chasing down the target in 30 overs. Cam Thorne was the best of bowlers with 3/22, while youngster Lockie Still (1/32) was the only other wicket-taker.
THIRDS
With 268 on the board, the boys toiled hard with the ball early without much luck, until evergreen veteran Timmsy claimed the first Moorabbin West wicket - thanks to a good catch from Ethan - with the score on 45. Brucey (1/66 off 13 overs) was threatening from the onset, traping a dangerous batsman in front with the score on 77. Charlie (1/22) entered the attack was unlucky not to claim a scalp in his first over, but a sharp slips catch from Timmsy saw the youngster rewarded for some steady bowling. The visitors put the foot on the accelerator from that point and took the game away from Pete Manakis' young side. Zander was thrown the ball with a batsman nearing a century and bowled him for 99. While the boys didn't get the win, the performance was a big improvement on the previous two games.
FOURTHS
Defending 191, veteran swing kings Monty and Vinod took the new pill and kept Hampton Central honest, but it proved to be former's day with a magnificent haul of 6/99 of 23 overs. Dave Bregazzi (2/23) and Rajiv (1/2) were the only other wicket-takers. With the game in the balance late in the day, the visitors managed to hold on by just one wicket. With two wins from their first three games, the boys sit in fourth position.
FIFTHS
With 121 on the board, a very young Aloi's All-Stars struggled against a very strong Hampton Central line-up but never gave up trying. Adam Waites was handy with the news ball, while juniors Tom Purcell and Aaron Swann backed him up with impressive spells. Making his season debut, Chris Lance may have been blasted into permanent retirement, with his left-arm stone-cold 🥧 blasted into neighbouring suburbs, forcing airspace to be closed.
