Round report – Round two one-dayers
Longmuir
After losing the toss and being asked to bowl, the boys toiled away without success until Max was brought into the attack and claimed the first Union scalp. Tossed the pill, Hugo didn't let his captain down by claiming three wickets with a lively three-wicket spell that had the hosts constantly on their toes and fearing for their safety. Surprisingly, Cal Cathcart got a wicket as Union posted a competitive 6/241 off their 40 overs. In return, Hugo and Shorty missed out, so it was left to young guns Bryce (26) and Paddy (49) to steady the ship. Unfortunately, wickets continued to fall until Dolly went beast mode, whipping the Union attack to the heavens with a brutal 48 n.o in a score of 204.
Quiney
Electing to bat after winning the toss, the twos lost two wickets with the score on 18, so Harry took it upon himself to turn the tide, dispatching the Kingston Heath attack to all parts of the ground with two 4s and three huge 6s in a score of 41. PD (26) and Mark D'Rozario (23) also made valuable contributions in a score of 9/163. Thrown the rock, exciting youngster Zac got the first breakthrough with visitors yet to bother the scorers. But they steadied from that point, until the skipper claimed three quick wickets to give his side hope. Alas, it was all in vain, as the boys were beaten in the 35th over.
3rds
After losing the toss and being asked to field, Doc got the boys up and about early with an absolute pearler of a catch off Paxman. Brenton then joined the party after Timms snapped one up in the slips, then young guns
Zander (first senior wicket) and Charlie combined to have Highett West in some trouble. The game started to heat up with some argy bargy between the teams, so Davo shut them up by turning back the clock and uprooting some stumps. In the end, some shoddy fielding and wayward bowling allowed a score of 5/165 to be posted by their chirpy combatants. In return, the boys never really got going, with Doc's tragic run out (not naming names) a case in point of team needing to apply itself more. Some lusty hitting from Chris 'Uncle Fester' Elkins gave a glimmer of hope late in proceedings, but 9/153 was all they could muster.
4ths
Finally, something to cheer about. After being sent in by Emerald Hill, openers Micky Papalie (53) and boom youngster Rohan Wilson (41) made them pay dearly, smashing the ball to all parts of Duncan McKinnon in a blistering opening stand. Gill wasn't missing out either, giving the visitor no respite with a hastily compiled 51. Raj (33) and Gayan (30) kept up the torment as the boys finished on an imposing 6/237. Charged with leading the attack, Rohan backed up his heroics with the bat with a wicket, while Vinod 'VB' Bagi was the best of the bowlers with 3/5 off eight impressive overs. Skipper Britty, still blowing out the cobwebs from his 'colourful' trip to North Amercia, also snagged three scalps in the comfortable 86-run win.
5ths
The winning ways continued in the 5ths, but it didn't come without controversy. Club legend and renowned hot head, Brissy, was effortlessly cruising towards a sparkling but overdue half century when he was involved in one of the more bizarre incidents to take place on a cricket field. To make even worse for the long-suffering Dees man, was his long-time nemesis James Bruce was involved. If you can believe this, Brissy (on 30) smashed a full-blooded straight drive that bounced off an evading Brucey on the full and landed agonisingly in the hands of a Brighton District fielder. Already bruised and embarrassed, Brucey had the indignity of copping the biggest spray from Brissy since he threatened to stab Steve 'Sticky Buns' Harris with a stump in the season of 08/09. Anyway, everyone else was delighted, and Brucey had the last laugh, posting a "very satisfying" of 51 n.o in a healthy score of 5/191. Jonno (42) and rising star Finn Gleeson (15 n.o) also key contributors. In return, the hosts were never in the hunt and finished on 7/98. Veteran Allan Ernst the best of the bowlers with 3/6 off four tight overs.
