LION PRIDE SAVAGES ZEBRA HERD
Round Report - Round 2
Longmuir
Looking to build on an impressive Round 1 win, Shorty and boys were confident they could take down the reigning premiers, East Sandy. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Hugo (32) and Campbell (23) got the side off to a solid start before Shorty (50) and Josh (37) continued to dispatch the visitors to all parts of Centenary. Malin smacked three quick boundaries in a classy knock of 15, while Liam took the score past 200 with a brutal 29 off 29 balls (2 fours and 3 sixes). Setting the Zebras 220 to win, 'Chocolates' (1/20) was at it again, picking up the first wicket with the score on 31. it was then time for the spin twins - with Malin (3/25) bamboozling the top order with three quick wickets. His partner in crime, Buddhika, then got in on the act, claiming 2/29. But the most impressive performance of the day went to a young man in just his second 'Longy' appearance, with Daniel Ewart claiming 4/33 to leave East Sandy shellshocked and easily beaten (149). Sitting proudly atop the ladder, the lads face crosstown rivals Mackie at home in Round 3.
QUINEY
Losing the toss and asked to bowl by East Sandy at Chisholm Reserve, Zac Milner (2/29) was impressive early, claiming two early wickets. Rob and Cameron both toiled hard to keep the hosts in check, while veterans PD and Mick Debono amongst the wickets with two each. Set 191 to win, Mick (28) and comeback kid Cadell (30) gave the side a great platform to launch off. Max (20) and Rory (37) continued to tick the scoreboard over. but with the game in the balance, the boys agonisingly fell 10 runs short, despite a handy knock of 28 not out by Tim Brisbane. Still winless, this performance shows the team isn't far off the mark.
THIRDS
After last week's frustrating loss to East Sandy, the boys nearly sent stand-in skipper Timmsy into retirement with another bitterly disappointing display. After winning the toss, youngsters Ethan and Rohan did well against a steady Washington Park attack. After Rohan departed, Gill (57) joined Smoothy (64), with going on to post classy half-centuries. Some late, lusty hitting from Davo saw the score reach 161 on a very fast Bailey deck. In return, Smoothy (2/27) backed-up his heroics with the bat with a menacing opening spell with the new nut. Ben Radlow continued to improve in his second game back from a long-term injury, while gun juniors Charlie (2/35) and Zander (0/18) did their part. But the pick of bowlers was the captain himself, with Timmsy giving his side hope with 3/17 off eight brilliant overs. In the end, though, some poor bowling and shoddy fielding saw the team snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Enough said...
FOURTHS
Winning the toss and sending industrial wasteland bandits Omega in, the boys did a marvellous job of restricting them to just 132 on a lightening-quick Duncan McKinnon. As per usual, Vinod (1/21), Josh (1/20), Monty (2/11), Lockie (2/42) were handy with the ball. Spritely veterans Doc and D Swanny also chimed in with a wicket each. In response, the visitors didn't know what him, with Rajiv (28), Travis (75 no, 13 fours and 2 sixes) and Lockie (19 no) putting Murrumbeena Road on high alert due to all the bombs landing on it. For those of you that don't know, besides a very talented cricketer, Trav is also James Bruce's personal trainer, so he'll be busy this week getting Brucey to work off the 4000 sushi rolls and Heinikens he's inhaled while working in Japan the past month. Good luck!
FIFTHS
In their opening match of the season, Aloi's All-Stars ventured to Malvern to take on St Andrews Gardiner, where they lost the toss and were asked to bat. Shaking off the rust, the boys compiled a respectable 5/125 off 30 overs. Senior citizen Greg Brisbane outshone his far younger teammates with a top score of 52, while lower-grade madman Jonno Guttman intrigued the hosts with a characteristically bizarre 30 not out. Young gun Finn Gleeson looked the goods with a sparkling 12 (2 fours). With the ball, the boys tried their best, but the far more experienced hosts reached the target with a few overs to spare. Boon youngster Aaron Swann - in just his first senior game - was the pick of the bowlers and only wicket-taker with 1/3 off two exciting overs. Simon 'Prof' Lucas bowled as well as his beloved Gold Coast Suns play footy. A very encouraging performance from the team.
